2021 Admissions Guide for International Students
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is a national key university specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine education. It was jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Beijing Municipal Government, and now it is directly under the management of the Ministry of Education of China. Founded in 1956, formerly known as Beijing Chinese Medical College, it is the first Chinese Medicine college approved by the State Council. In 1960, it was identified by the central government as a national key university, and renamed Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 1993. In 1996, it was listed under the National 211 Project as a key university. In 2000, it merged with Beijing College of Acupuncture, Orthopedics and Traumatology, forming a new Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. In 2011, it was listed under the 985 Project, a major decision made by CPC and the State Council on building first-class universities of international caliber at the turn of the century. In 2017, three disciplines (Chinese Medicine, Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica) of BUCM have been listed under theDoubleWorld-Class Project. In 2018, it was appointed by the Ministry of Education chairman of the steering committee of specialty teaching in Chinese Medicine and Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine in higher education institutions. The university now has three campuses – the Hepingjie Campus, the Wangjing Campus and the Liangxiang Campus.

It has become a world-renowned TCM university integrating teaching, scientific research, medical treatment and Chinese medicine culture. The university is one of the first Chinese Medicine institutions in China to set up Doctoral Degree Program and Center for Post-Doctoral studies. It has set up 3Post-Doctoraltraining programs: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica and Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine. It has also 42 Doctoral Degree programs of the specialized disciplines and 46 Master’s Degree programs. It has several teaching schools, including the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the School of Chinese Materia Medica, the School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, the International School, the Department of Chinese Medicine of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Management, the School of Nursing, the School of Chinese Culture Studies, the School of Continuing Education, the School of Distance Education, the School of Humanities, and other teaching units. BUCM has 4 school-level research institutions, namely Beijing Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, National Institute of TCM Constitution and Preventive Medicine, National Institute of Chinese Medicine Development and Strategy, and Institute of Encephalopathy, Beijing, China. It also has 8 affiliated hospitals for clinical teaching, 16 clinical practice bases, the National Center for the International Communication of Chinese Medicine, the International Promotion of Chinese Language – Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Base (Beijing), and a Museum. The university currently has 3 national teaching teams, with a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and a National Outside-school Practice and Education Base for college Students. There are 50 scientific research bases at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, and more than 770 projects such as the 973 Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Support Plan, the Major Special Projects and the key projects of the Natural Fund. The research results of Physical Identification with Chinese Medicine have been incorporated into the National Basic Public Health Service Code, which forms the Chinese Medicine professional standard and the national standard for the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases. BUCM is also the sponsor of national-level academic journals like Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Journal, Modern TCM clinic, TCM Education, and Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences (English Edition), all playing important roles in academic exchange of Chinese Medicine, of which Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Journal has been awarded the title of 100 Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals five times in a row.
From its inception, the school was the first higher institution of Chinese Medicine in New China to accept foreign students to study Chinese Medicine, and has so far trained more than 20,000 Chinese Medicine professionals from 94 countries and regions, and has established cooperative relationships with 118 well-known universities and research institutions from 31 countries and regions. In 1996, in cooperation with Middlesex University, UK, BUCM became the first university in China that could independently confer a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine in a university abroad. It take the lead in providing undergraduate education in Traditional Chinese Medicine in the world's top 50 universities, and in cooperation with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, it set up a "Chinese Medicine - Biology" double bachelor’s degree education. In 2012, the Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute was established in Hyogo College of Medicine, Japan, to integrate Chinese Medicine course into the modern medical education system. In cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, Spain, the first EU-recognized Master's degree program in Chinese Medicine was opened. The school has also established the first Chinese medicine bachelor’s degree program completely taught in English, and the first Chinese medicine masters and doctoral degree programs designed for students who are already biomedical doctors to learn Chinese medicine.
The school continues to explore and innovate its international development, the BUCM Program pioneered the overseas TCM Centers, which combine medical, educational, scientific research and cultural communication, and provides an effective method for the overseas development of Chinese Medicine. It has set up TCM Centers in Germany, Australia, Russia and the United States. The Koetzting Hospital of Chinese Medicine, established in Germany in 1991, has set a precedent for Chinese universities to run Chinese Medicine specialty hospitals overseas and become a model for Chinese Medicine to the world. The Russian TCM Center has successfully obtained the qualification of medical institutions in the Russian Federation, becoming the first Chinese Medicine specialty hospital in Russia to be included in the national medical insurance system. The Australian TCM Centre provides Chinese Medicine education for Western doctors. The TCM Center of the United States aims at the characteristics of Chinese medicine and the frontiers of medicine, and has successfully held many high-end academic conferences around cancer, epilepsy, pediatric diseases, reproductive diseases, etc. In 2019, it continued to promote the integration and development of traditional and modern medicine in partnership with the National Children's Hospital of the United States. Overseas centers have become an important platform for international medical and health services, education, teaching and academic exchanges in Chinese medicine.
1. Premier Institution of Higher Education in TCM
1.1Strong Faculty
The university currently has 5,233 teaching and administrative staff, including 1,478 faculty members, of whom 61.84% have senior professional and technical positions, 84.64% have Masters’ degree or above. Three hundred forty-six are PhD Supervisors.
The university has one Academician in the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), six TCM Grand Masters, three National-Level TCM Masters, thirty-three Beijing-Level TCM Masters, four Chief Scientists of the 973Project; four winners of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, nine Qi Huang Scholars, seven professors in charge of the National key Research and development program, “Research on modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine.”
In addition, there are five leaders in the Scientific and Technological Innovation Program of the 10,000 People Plan; one outstanding teacher of the 10,000 People Plan, three winners of The Outstanding Youth Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China; three members of the 7th Academic Evaluation Group of the State Council; seven candidates for the Million Talents Project, eight young and middle-aged experts with National-level outstanding contributions, four outstanding teachers of TCM; and 134 experts who enjoy special government allowances.
Altogether, these form a teaching team led by well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad, comprised of both outstanding young and senior professors.
1.2High-Quality Clinical Practice Base
The university currently has three directly affiliated hospitals: the first clinical medical school Dongzhimen Hospital; the second clinical medical school Dongfang Hospital; and the third clinical medical school, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Third Affiliated Hospital. In addition, it owns Guo Yi Tang, the most influential TCM clinic in China.
In recent years, the school has followed the principle of "guiding the focus of medical and health work outwards into the community and sharing resources with other segments of the society and industry." It continually explores new models of cooperation and joint development, building a regional landmark high-quality Chinese medicine service platform.
It has established the fourth clinical medical school Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Zaozhuang Hospital; the fifth clinical medical school, Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Shenzhen Hospital; the sixth clinical medical school Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Fangshan Hospital; the seventh clinical medical school Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Sun Si Miao Hospital; and the eighth clinical medical school Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The eight affiliated hospitals have a total of 7,475 beds. As of 2019, there had been 10.16 million of outpatient and emergency visits and 190,000 hospitalized patients. In addition, the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Guang'anmen Hospital, Xiyuan Hospital, Wangjing Hospital, Beijing TCM Hospital and other 16 clinical teaching bases undertake the clinical teaching and internship work of the whole school students.
The school currently has seventeen national clinical key specialties and forty-four key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It also has six Chinese medicine Master Inheritance Studio, two National Chinese medicine Academic school Inheritance Studio, forty of the nation’s famous Chinese medicine experts Inheritance Studio, and forty-four studios of Beijing Chinese medicine "Inheriting 3 + 3 Project".
BUCM also founded Europe's first Chinese medicine hospital in Germany, the Koetzting Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and established overseas TCM centers in Sydney (Australia), St. Petersburg (Russia) and Maryland (United States).
2. Comprehensive TCM Education System
The school is committed to building a training system for medical talent that is oriented towards the future with high-level smart-education. The university offers 12 undergraduate degree programs distinctive in Chinese medicine culture: Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medicine Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy, Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina, Rehabilitation Therapy, Nursing, etc. All the programs offered encompass the distinguishing features of Chinese Medicine Culture.
3. Aptitude Style Teaching Models
Undergraduate Medical Education for foreign students focuses on teaching students according to their aptitude, and thus implementing training on a personalized basis. BUCM has two training models: one for international students, and one for Chinese students. International students who meet the Regulations on the Administration of Undergraduate Students Status of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine may also study in the Chinese students training model if they wish.

The undergraduate program for international students has various forms of practical teaching, including practical training in Chinese medicine skills, diagnostics and clinical practice with experienced doctors, labor education and graduation internships.

Taking the China National Physician Qualification Examination: you can sign up for the China National Physician Qualification Examination preparation program. The current pass rate of international students in our school is over 60 percent.
Application for postgraduate studies: Graduates may apply for a continuing Master and Doctoral degree at our university and other medical institutions.

Taking the Physician Qualification Examinations in several countries: You can register for theNCCAOMcertificationexaminations (USA); the Australian Chinese Physician/Acupuncturist Examination; the Canadian Chinese Physician/Acupuncturist Examination; and other such efforts. BUCM is one of the schools in China that offers the Clean Needle Technique (CNT) Exam.
2.Undergraduate Program Introduction
Teaching language: Chinese, Bilingual (Chinese and English)2.1 Traditional Chinese Medicine (Training Objectives and Main Courses)
This program aims to train students to become Chinese medicine physicians with a systematic understanding of basic TCM theoretical knowledge, to be competent in professional knowledge and practical skills, and to be equipped with independent learning abilities. Graduates can engage in areas such as Chinese medicine treatment, health prevention and rehabilitative care, or Chinese medicine teaching, research, and administration in healthcare organizations.
In the Chinese-English bilingual teaching program, international students will be able to strengthen their Chinese language and understanding of Chinese culture. It focuses on both theoretical and clinical training, and places emphasis on both Chinese and Western medicine. This program aims to produce global talents well-trained in Chinese medicine theoretical knowledge and professional skills. Graduates can engage in clinical practice or health care related work.
Students will learn more than 2000 hours of compulsory Chinese Medicine courses and general education that is integrated throughout the curriculum.
Chinese medicine main courses include: Basic courses of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Fundamental Theory of TCM, TCM Diagnosis, etc.); courses of the Classics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage); Jin Gui Yao Lue (Prescriptions from the Golden Coffer) etc.); Basic Medical Courses (including pharmacology, pathology, etc.); Clinical courses of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, etc.); and Clinical courses of Western Medicine (including Internal Medicine, Fundamentals of Diagnostics).
General education courses include: Traditional Chinese Culture, Chinese Language and so on. Based on the learning content, course teachers will use different teaching and learning strategies, including classroom lectures, group discussion, bedside teaching, demonstration, practical skills training, clinical internship, and community service.
2.2 Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina (Training Objectives and Main Courses)
Teaching language: Chinese, Bilingual (Chinese and English)
This program aims to train students to master systematically the fundamental theories, professional knowledge, and practical skills of acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, as well as be equipped with independent learning ability. Graduates can engage in clinical practice in Acupuncture, Tuina or Chinese medicine departments in healthcare organizations, or in areas such as teaching, research and administration.
Students will learn more than 2000 hours of compulsory Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina courses and general education that are integrated throughout the curriculum.
Acupuncture specialty courses include: Basic courses of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Fundamental Theory of TCM, TCM Diagnosis, etc.); courses of the Classics of Chinese medicine (including Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage); Jin Gui Yao Lue (Prescriptions from the Golden Coffer, etc.); Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina courses (including Meridians and Acupuncture points, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Therapy, etc.); Basic Medical Courses (including pharmacology, pathology, etc.); Clinical courses of Chinese medicine (including Chinese Internal Medicine, Chinese Gynecology, etc.); and Clinical courses of Western Medicine (including Internal Medicine, Fundamentals of Diagnostics).
General education courses include: Traditional Chinese Culture, Chinese Language and so on. Based on the learning content, course teachers will use different teaching and learning strategies, including classroom lectures, group discussion, bedside teaching, demonstration, practical skills training, clinical internship, and community service. The focus will be on developing the student’s basic professional skills in Acupuncture needling and Moxibustion, as well as Tuina manipulation techniques.
2.3 Program Characteristics
The curriculum plan and curriculum system of the International Student Degree Program are embodied in the general education module, the professional education module, the student self-development module, and the practice module. The university has created an exemplary atmosphere for the diversified development of students. Students can explore their interests, and actively choose some courses. The optional courses include courses of the Classics of Chinese Medicine, clinical courses of Western Medicine, courses of Frontiers in Medicine, clinical courses of Chinese Medicine and so on.
Highlights of the Chinese Medicine Program: Emphasis on Chinese Medicine diagnosis training, Syndrome differentiation training courses are offered together with fundamental theories of TCM and clinical courses. The academic philosophy of “early clinical training, frequent clinical training, and continual clinical training” is integrated throughout the learning experience to train the diagnostic and clinical skills of students.
Highlights of the Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina Program: The curriculum carries characteristic features of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina. At the same time as the clinical practice courses begin, courses such as “unique therapies” with strong practicality are also offered.
Personalized student development: In accordance with the current Regulations on the Administration of Undergraduate Student Registration of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, at the beginning of the third semester, according to the results of the assessment, such as grades, and combined with the student's own wishes, students can choose the Chinese student training model of the same major to complete undergraduate studies.
3 Application
3.1 Qualification Requirements
1. In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China, Non-Chinese citizens holding valid foreign passports, with good moral character; in good physical and mental health; and have high school or above qualifications may apply.
2. Be 18 years old or above as of 31 December 2021.
3. According to Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of China, if one or both parents is a Chinese citizen who has settled in a foreign country so that the applicant has foreign nationality at birth, the applicant does not have to have Chinese nationality. From 2021 onwards, applicants for entry into this university for undergraduate education as international students must, in addition to meeting the school's other qualifications, hold a valid foreign passport that was obtained before 30 April 2017, or have a proof of nationality, and have a record of actual residence in a foreign country for more than two years between 30 April 2017 and 30 April 2021 (the actual residence in a foreign country for nine months of the year can be calculated as one year, whichever is the entry and exit stamps).
4. Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents who apply to enter our undergraduate level as international students after emigrating and acquiring foreign nationality shall hold a valid foreign passport or a proof of nationality that was obtained before 30 April 2017, and have a record of actual residence in a foreign country for more than two years between 30 April 2017 and 30 April 2021 (the actual residence in a foreign country for nine months of the year can be calculated as one year, based on the entry and exit stamps).
3.2 Admission Process
Submit application documents →Assessment of documents by BUCM→Admission →Receive the admission letter and the Foreign Students VISA application form (JW202 form) → Apply for visa at the Chinese embassy of the student’s country of origin →Arrive and register at school.
* It takes at least 8-10 weeks from the application deadline to the time when the admission information is sent. During this interval, we will review and evaluate the application materials and, if necessary, we will notify you to complete all the application materials. The university will only accept those who have completed application materials and have passed the review. Admission notices and other materials will be issued from June 2021. After admission, the school will review again the applicant's information and materials. If there are violations or false information, once confirmed, disqualification will occur immediately. We will inform you of our offer as soon as possible, but due to limited staff, we may not be able to respond to your letter or e-mail quickly.
3.3 Application Materials

(1)BUCM Application Form for Undergraduate Admission for International Student (downloaded on the official website of the College);
(2)Photocopy of the passport information page (Passports must have a validity of at least 6 months from the date of submission of the application);
(3)Full-time high school or above graduation documents (new graduates can first provide an expected graduation certificate.), original or notarized documents, in Chinese or English;
(4)Academic transcript (Including at least one of the following), original or notarized documents, in Chinese or English:
﹒Official academic transcripts of all courses offered by the institution where the highest academic degree was obtained (original and notarized documents in Chinese or English);
﹒Transcript of national or regional high school unified graduation examination;
﹒Results of international standardized tests (e.g. SAT/ACT/A-Level/AP/IB/STPM, etc.);
(5)A birth certificate or proof of nationality that the applicant has been naturalized for over four years.
(6)Language requirements:
﹒Chinese program: Applicants whose native language is not Chinese need to provide HSK level 4 (inclusive) or above certificate;
﹒Bilingual program (Chinese and English): Applicants whose native language is not English need to provide score reports of TOEFL/IELTS or relevant English proficiency tests;
(7)Video (about five minutes of a self-introductory video). Some students may be interviewed online.
(8)A screenshot of the successful payment voucher or online remittance of the registration fee.*
* Once the registration fee has been paid, it will not be refunded. If you are not admitted or had included an ineligible item for application, the registration fee will not be refunded. Applicants are advised to consult with the Admissions Office of the International Academy for eligibility and other admission requirements before paying the application fee.

5.1 Chinese Government Scholarships

5.2 Beijing Foreign Students Scholarship
﹒Application Time: From January to June, 2021
﹒Application way: Self-funded students who meet the registration qualification can apply for the scholarship. After expert evaluation, students with excellent performance will be awarded the scholarship.
