History[]
Background[]
- "I suppose you think you'll be enjoying yourself with that oaf? Well, think again, boy — it's into the forest you're going and I'm much mistaken if you'll all come out in one piece."
- — Argus Filch to Harry Potter about his detention[src]
After finding both Harry Potter and Hermione Granger at the top of the Astronomy Tower, Argus Filch escorted them to Minerva McGonagall's office for punishment, with Minerva deciding they would be serving detention, joined by Draco Malfoy[2] and Neville Longbottom, who were also found out of bed. Missives were delivered the following morning, notifying them to meet up Filch eleven o'clock that night at the Entrance Hall.[1]
The detention[]
- "Look there, see that stuff shinin' on the ground? Silvery stuff? That's unicorn blood. There's a unicorn in there bin hurt badly by summat. This is the second time in a week. I found one dead last Wednesday. We're gonna try an' find the poor thing. We might have ter put it out of its misery."
- — Hagrid regarding the purpose of the detention[src]
Filch led the four serving detention to meet up with Rubeus Hagrid, who told them that a unicorn had been injured in the Forbidden Forest and that they were to search for it. After some initial difficulty with Malfoy's behaviour, Harry, Malfoy, and Hagrid's hound, Fang found the slain unicorn; however, before they could report their discovery to Hagrid, a hooded figure swept down upon them, causing Malfoy and Fang to flee. Harry was paralysed by fright and the pain in his scar and could not run away. As Harry collapsed to the ground, he was saved by the centaur Firenze. Firenze explained to Harry the magical properties of unicorn blood and how the hooded figure was Lord Voldemort. Hagrid and the others soon appeared and they all returned to the castle.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Ron Weasley replaced Neville Longbottom in the film version, as the film changed the circumstances to how they were caught.
- The Detention! trading card illustrated by Scott M. Fischer from the Adventures at Hogwarts Expansion of the Harry Potter Trading Card Game, shows Minerva scolding Harry and Hermione with Neville in the background; it may be depicting the scene that led Minerva announcing this detention.
- In some video games, this detention is depicted differently, although it is depicted accurately in the PS1 version of the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is also not featured in the PC version.
- In the console versions of the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, this event is not a detention, but a quest in which Harry enters the Forbidden Forest at night with Hagrid to collect moondew for Potions. Eventually, Harry finds Voldemort feasting on the unicorn in a clearing, in which Hagrid wakes him up after passing out, explaining to him about unicorn blood and Voldemort.
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, Hagrid is caring for a sick unicorn in his hut, before the trio and Draco Malfoy interrupt him, causing the unicorn to run into the Forbidden Forest. Harry and Draco find Voldemort preparing to feast on the unicorn with a knife and fork, with Firenze appearing to scare Voldemort off, saving the unicorn.
