The X-Men are gearing up to face dangerous threats in a new era with the "From the Ashes" relaunch. Mutants are once again hunted and feared by a world that doesn't understand them, which can lead to the resurgence of powerful and misguided villains. The X-Men are used to these threats, though the new teams might not have the strength to face some of their more powerful foes.

Several X-Men villains are omega-level threats of the mind or wield incredible levels of energy. However, just as many dangerous mutants rely solely on their incredible strength to overpower the X-Men. Mutants like Sebastian Shaw and Vulcan enhance their strength through energy absorption, while others like Blob and Apocalypse are naturally tougher.

15 Blockbuster is a Powerful Marauder with Asgardian-Level Strength
First Appearance: X-Factor #10 (August 1986) by Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Bob Wiacek, Petra Scotese and Joe Rosen
The Marauders stand as one of the X-Men's deadliest teams. However, the individual members of the team rarely get much credit for being some of the strongest mutants around. This is largely because most of them are now clones who frequently fall in battle before being reborn.
However, one of the team's members stands out in strength for one incredible career-making feat. Michael Baer, a super-strong mutant named Blockbuster, fought alongside Sinister's Marauders. During the Molock Massacre, he faced none other than Thor in battle. Blockbuster was strong enough to break the powerful Asgardian's arm in battle, proving his power. However, Thor revealed his own strength shortly after killing Blockbuster with his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. Still, Blockbuster made his name at that moment, and his clones continue to showcase his power.

14 The Brood Are a Deadly Species of Parasitic Aliens
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #155 (December 1981) by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, Bob Wiacek, Glynis Wein and Joe Rosen
The X-Men have encountered several deadly threats in their travels through space over the years. However, none have quite matched the same threat level as the dangerous alien species, the Brood. Similar in design to the Xenomorphs from the hit Alien franchise, the Brood aliens are all teeth and claws wrapped in a powerful and nearly impenetrable exoskeleton.
The true strength of the Brood comes not in their ferocity or powerful bodies but in their sheer numbers.

When the Brood attack, they do it with vast numbers and travel in armies aboard enslaved cosmic alien whales. They can also further increase their numbers by infecting their enemies to add their power to their own. Only a few like Wolverine have been able to fight off the influence of a gestating Brood queen, though if he hadn't, it's likely that no one would have been able to stop the Brood's relentless invading force.
13 Sebastian Shaw Absorbs Energy To Increase His Strength
The X-Men first encountered Sebastian Shaw when he was the Black King of the Hellfire Club's mutant-filled Inner Circle. He was a mutant elitist who used his wealth to manipulate politics from behind the scenes, initially making him the perfect choice to help lead the Hellfire Trading Company during the Krakoa Era. Of course, Shaw is never to be trusted even when allied with him, due to his traitorous nature and the incredible power at his disposal.

Sebastian Shaw's mutant ability allows him to completely absorb any blow to his body. He can take the hardest hit from the strongest member of the X-Men and absorb all of the kinetic energy, redirecting it through his body as pure strength. Shaw can go toe-to-toe with almost any powerhouse on the planet if they hit him first to provide enough energy to return the favor. However, it is possible to overload or short-circuit his abilities, limiting his increasing strength levels.
12 Sabretooth's Animalistic Strength Has Been Artificially Increased
First Appearance: Iron Fist #14 (May 1977) by Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Dan Green, Janice Cohen, Gaspar Saladino and Annette Kawecki
During a rough upbringing, Victor Creed's mutant gifts gave him an animalistic edge, but it also brought out a sadistic killer who would eventually become known as Sabretooth. His mutant healing factor slowed his aging, and he fought several wars over the decades. Sabretooth formed a lasting rivalry with Wolverine before he was genetically modified for the first time by the Weapon X program. Sabretooth's strength was always at peak human ability, though it was increased on more than one occasion over the years by a few different people.

Weapon X played with his genes on more than one occasion, as did the government's Hound program. Sabretooth later received implants and an adamantium skeleton, further increasing his strength level until he could lift close to 100 tons. Apocalypse then did some tweaking to prepare him for a potential role as the Horsemen Death before Weapon X. Sabretooth's strength may not be as impressive as some of the X-Men's foes. Still, his threat ramps up when adding Creed's sheer brutality and razor-sharp claws.
11 The Blob Gained Enhanced Strength Through Genetic Testing
First Appearance: X-Men #3 (November 1963) by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Paul Reinman and Artie Simek

Frederick J. Dukes was one of the first mutants the original X-Men faced in the comics. He was a dangerous threat known as The Blob, whose limited gravity-increasing ability and super malleable body allowed him to take on all five of the X-Men by himself. He joined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and fought the X-Men for years until he settled on Krakoa and briefly joined Captain America's Uncanny Avengers.
The Blob is another mutant whose abilities have been altered a few times to increase his power levels. One of the most significant power upgrades came during the Onslaught saga when his strength and body mass were increased to superhuman levels. He could absorb the blast of a missile without feeling a thing or throw a 75-ton tank at his opponents. He was eventually depowered and returned to his normal strength levels, though his incredibly durable frame still poses a problem to anyone he faces.

10 Holocaust's Armored Battle Suit Rechannels Stolen Bio-Energy
First Appearance: X-Men: Alpha #1 (December 1994) by Scott Lobdell, Mark Waid, Roger Cruz, Steve Epting, Tim Townsend, Dan Panosian, Steve Buccellato, Electric Crayon, Richard Starkings and Comicraft
Fans first met the horrifyingly powerful mutant named Holocaust during the iconic Age of Apocalypse event. In an altered timeline where Apocalypse took control of a world without Xavier, his son Nemesis followed in his footsteps. Nemesis could drain the life energy of others to increase his powers further, though it eventually came at the cost of his body and he became Holocaust.
Holocaust fought for his father against that world's X-Men and was one of the few survivors of the AoA timeline.
Holocaust was forced to constantly drain the life energy of others to sustain his form, so he wore a powerful suit of crystalline armor that made him an even bigger threat. He could increase his power by absorbing life energy from his opponents and rechannel that into his armor to increase his strength and durability. Unfortunately, the armor was also a liability, as it could be cracked and destroyed, which cost him his physical body and strength levels.

9 Omega Red Can Enhance His Strength By Absorbing Life Energy
First Appearance: X-Men #4 (November 1991) by John Byrne, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Joe Rosas and Tom Orzechowski
Mutant experimentation runs rampant in the Marvel Universe, especially during events like the Cold War. Arkady Rossovich was a sadistic serial killer imprisoned by the Russian government who became the perfect test subject. He was transformed into the murderous Omega Red and became a superpowered operative for the government.
Omega Red was initially capable of lifting around 10 tons, which could be increased with the aid of his powerful Carbonadium tentacles housed within his arms that he used to feed on his victims. When Omega Red was reborn in a new body during the Krakoa Age, he gained the ability to increase his size by absorbing the life energy of living beings. This increased his strength exponentially and potentially limitlessly, provided he had enough victims to drain with his death factor.

While his physical strength is no match for some of the X-Men's strongest villains, he makes up for it with telekinetic might. He can create strong telekinetic force fields that can withstand the Hulk's strongest punches. If they met in battle, Exodus could then use his telekinesis to bolster his own punches and knock the Hulk into orbit. Exodus also has the unique ability to psionically increase his power by using the faith of others who believe in him. While he briefly fought alongside the X-Men on Krakoa, his absence in From the Ashes could spell trouble for Marvel's mutants.

First Appearance: X-Men #12 (May 1965) by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, Vince Colletta and Sam Rosen

Cain Marko's exploits as a villain were full of destruction, and Juggernaut faced powerful enemies like the Hulk a few times over the years. Juggernaut's incredible strength waxed and waned based on Cyttorak's pleasure over his avatar's actions. Marko nearly lost all his incredible strength when he started working with the X-Men. Juggernaut found a way to regain his strength using ancient artifacts and armor from Cyttorak, making the X-Men very thankful that he remained on their side for the time being.
5 Gladiator is the Mighty Praetor of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard
First Appearance: X-Men #107 (July 1977) by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, Dan Green, Andy Yanchus, Joe Rosen
Kallark is the strongest member of an incredibly powerful race known as the Strontians. As the most powerful, he earned his place as the Praetor of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, a role he honorably holds with loyalty to the Emperor. While this sometimes makes him an ally to the X-Men, he is often forced to be an enemy to them as well.

Whoever runs the Shiar Empire has one of Marvel's most powerful characters at their beck and call. Not only does Gladiator have incredible strength, speed, and endurance, but he can also fly unaided through space. He has powerful energy blasts he can shoot from his eyes, and his confidence-based abilities mean he can punch even harder if he woke up on the right side of the bed that morning. Of course, that can also be his greatest weakness, as Cannonball once almost knocked Gladiator out after making the alien powerhouse briefly doubt his own strength.

Onslaught was also incredibly physically intimidating. He punched Juggernaut so hard he flew across multiple states before violently crashlanding. Onslaught also took on Hulk before facing the combined might of the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Only when Onslaught sacrificed his physical form did Marvel's heroes finally gain an advantage and take down the powerful villain.

X-Men
Since their debut in 1963, Marvel's X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel's heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.
Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world's second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel's most popular and important franchises.
